Cruising BC's Inside Passage: Exploring Lacey Falls in the Broughton Archipelago

If you're cruising the Broughton Archipelago, Lacey Falls is one of those places people always talk about. We made the trip there on January 6, 2025, and while it wasn’t quite what we expected, it was still worth the visit.

Leaving Turnbull Cove in the Fog

We started the day in Turnbull Cove. It's a great anchorage with a mud bottom, so holding is solid. It’s also a good spot to leave the boat and explore by dinghy. When we left that morning, the whole area was socked in with fog, which made things interesting.

Quick Drive-By of Sullivan Bay

On the way to Lacey Falls, we pulled into Sullivan Bay. Unfortunately the marina was closed for the season. Remember, we were here in January.

Even though we didn’t stop at Sullivan Bay this time, it’s worth mentioning that it has an interesting history. It started as a fishing outpost and is now a popular marina spot during the summer. The nickname “Little America” fits—it has all the things boaters need, and lots of American boaters spend time there.

Arriving at Lacey Falls

Our plan was to dip the bow of our 78' boat into the waterfall. But since it was January, the water flow was too low. We could see rocks at the base, so getting too close wasn’t safe either so we backed off and just admired the view. The waterfall was still beautiful, though, with different colours of algae growing on the rocks.

Tip: You’ll probably get a better experience if you visit during the spring or after a good rain.

Backtracking to Viner Sound

After Lacey Falls, we headed to Viner Sound. It’s calm, protected, and when we arrived, we were greeted by seven trumpeter swans. Apparently, they winter there. It was a cool way to end the day.

Final Thoughts

Even though we couldn’t dip our bow into Lacey Falls, the trip was still awesome. Between the foggy departure from Turnbull Cove, checking out Sullivan Bay, and the swan-filled sunset at Viner Sound, it was a solid day of cruising. If you're heading through the Broughtons, Lacey Falls is worth a visit—but maybe wait for spring melt.

Thinking of starting your own sailing or travel YouTube channel? You're not alone. With more people choosing to document their lives on the water or on the road, YouTube has become a popular platform for sharing adventures, building communities, and—yes—making some money along the way.

But is it all sunsets and subscribers? Let’s break down the pros and cons of starting your own YouTube channel based on real experience.

The Pros of Starting a Sailing or Travel YouTube Channel

1. It’s Fun to Document Your Adventures

One of the best things about starting a YouTube channel is being able to relive your travels. From epic sailing passages to remote beach hikes, documenting your journey turns those memories into stories you can revisit—and share—with the world.

2. You Can Make Money

Yes, it’s possible to earn an income from your YouTube channel. Once you’re monetized, ad revenue, affiliate marketing, sponsorships, and Patreon can help fund your lifestyle. While it’s not fast money, it’s real money—with real potential.

3. Family & Friends Can Follow Along

Want to keep your loved ones in the loop without typing out endless updates? A YouTube channel gives them a front-row seat to your journey, from boat projects to wildlife encounters.

4. You Can Build a Brand

Starting a YouTube channel is a powerful way to build a personal brand. Whether you're all about boat maintenance, ocean conservation, or family travel, your content can attract an audience that aligns with your values and passions.

5. You’ll Connect with Like-Minded People

One of the most rewarding aspects of YouTube is the community. You'll meet other travelers, sailors, and creators—both online and in person. Sometimes, the comments section becomes its own little support group.

The Cons of Starting a YouTube Channel

1. You’ll Be Judged (Sometimes Harshly)

Putting your life online means opening yourself up to criticism. Some of it will be helpful. Some of it won’t. And if you’re a female creator, sadly, you might get judged even more harshly.

2. It’s a Ton of Work

Filming, editing, writing titles, making thumbnails, managing social media, and learning YouTube’s ever-changing algorithm—it’s not just pressing record. You’ll need to learn a bunch of new skills and spend a lot of time behind a screen.

3. Growth Is Slow (At First)

Most channels don’t blow up overnight. It might take months or even years before you reach monetization or see significant traffic. You’ll need patience, consistency, and a thick skin to keep going. MrBeast suggests that aspiring YouTubers should aim to create and upload at least 100 videos before expecting to see substantial growth or success.

4. It Becomes a Business

Once you start making money, things change. Your adventures become content, and that means scheduling shoots, tracking expenses, and yes—filing taxes. If you're doing this seriously, you'll need to treat it like a business.

5. You’re on a Content Schedule

To keep your audience (and income) growing, you’ll need to post consistently. That means editing videos while anchored in a windy bay, or uploading from a marina when you’d rather be hiking. The flexibility of travel life? It tightens up when the upload deadline looms.

Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?

Starting a sailing or travel YouTube channel can be an amazing experience, full of creativity, connection, and opportunities. But it’s also a lot of work, and success takes time, effort, and a willingness to grow thick skin.

If you're passionate about sharing your story and ready to commit to the learning curve, then go for it! Just know that the camera captures the adventure—but also the hustle behind it.

What We Wish We Knew at the BEGINNING:

If we were starting over, the very first thing we’d do is read The YouTube Formula by Derral Eves.

Derral is a powerhouse in the YouTube world—mentor to creators like MrBeast, Jenny Hoyos, and top sailing and travel channels like Adventure Crews and Tread the Globe.

After reading the book, we’d go all in on his Channel Jumpstart mentorship program. It’s intense, but it’s packed with insider knowledge that works.

If you decide to join, tell them Janis Carmena from Onboard Tangaroa sent you—I do get a small reward for referrals, but I only recommend things I truly believe in. And believe me, this program helped us monetize our second channel in just 3 days. It’s a game-changer.

Gorge Harbour on Cortes Island is a stunning and historically rich anchorage along BC’s Inside Passage. Known for its narrow entrance, ancient petroglyphs, and active aquaculture, this well-protected harbour offers a mix of history, natural beauty, and practical convenience for cruisers. We arrived on December 28, 2024, and while the season meant many places were closed, it was still an incredible stop.

Navigating the Entrance to Gorge Harbour

The entrance to Gorge Harbour is narrow but deep, making it a straightforward passage for most boats. We took our 78-foot yacht through without issue, but caution is always key—especially when dealing with currents and the occasional traffic from local boats.

Check out the video we made about Gorge Harbour, Cortes Island. It shows the yacht club, the petroglyphs and the aquaculture farms. It will also show the entrance.

Spotting the First Nations Petroglyphs

As soon as you enter the harbour, look to the left. The ancient petroglyphs are painted in dark red, about 100 feet above the water on the cliff walls. They sit just above a natural ledge, where someone could have once stood to create these remarkable works of art. Finding them takes a keen eye, but it’s a powerful reminder of the deep First Nations history in this area.

Aquaculture in Gorge Harbour

The harbour is home to extensive shellfish farming, with oyster and mussel beds lining the shoreline. The aquaculture industry is a big part of the local economy, so if you’re a fan of fresh seafood, this is a great place to stock up—just check what’s in season!

The Yacht Club & Shoreside Amenities

Gorge Harbour is home to a yacht club, which, during the summer, offers a lively atmosphere with amenities for boaters. While most things were closed during our visit, we still checked out the beautiful grounds, dinghy dock, and a few interesting features:

🚤 Dinghy Dock: Easy access to shore.
🍔 Food Truck & Yurts: Looked like great summer options for those staying longer.
🐶 Dog Rules: If you’re cruising with a dog, note that leashes are required around the yacht club and marina area.

The store was open, which was handy for grabbing last-minute supplies.

Anchoring in Gorge Harbour

We dropped anchor in mud on the southeast corner of the harbour, well away from the moored boats and aquaculture farms. Holding was excellent, and the harbour provided great protection from winter weather.

Dinghy Exploration & Finding the Petroglyphs

After settling in, we took the dinghy back to the entrance of the harbour to get a closer look at the petroglyphs. Finding them took some effort, but they were worth the search. If you visit, take your time and look for reddish markings on the cliff face—they blend in more than you’d expect!

A Great Place for Boat Work

We used Gorge Harbour as a home base while we installed new alternators on our generator. It’s a great place for boat projects, as long as you bring all the parts you need—supplies can be limited, especially in the off-season.

Final Thoughts: A Perfect Stop in the Inside Passage

Whether you’re visiting for the history, the scenery, or the convenience, Gorge Harbour is well worth the stop. The secure anchorage, nearby amenities, and fascinating petroglyphs make it a unique and memorable part of any Inside Passage journey.

Would we return?

Absolutely!

Next time, hopefully in warmer weather so we can enjoy even more of what this beautiful harbour has to offer.

Cruising through British Columbia’s Inside Passage or exploring the rugged coastline is an unforgettable experience—but where do you park the boat when the day is done? Whether you’re pulling into a fancy marina, tying up to a mooring buoy, or dropping the hook, each option has its own costs, quirks, and considerations.

Let’s break down the real costs of docking, mooring, and anchoring in BC, so you can plan your stops without blowing your cruising budget.

Docking at Marinas: Pay Up for Convenience

Marinas are like hotels for boats—you get amenities like power, water, showers, and sometimes even laundry. But just like hotels, they come at a price.

In BC marinas, expect to pay anywhere from $1.50 to $4.00 per foot per night for transient moorage. Want a slip for the long haul? Monthly and annual moorage rates vary wildly, but here are some examples:

🛥️ Van Isle Marina (Victoria): $2.75–$4.00 per foot per night, plus utility fees.

⚓ Coal Harbour Marina (Vancouver): Annual slips require a $10,000 refundable deposit (ouch) and a $500 admin fee.

🌊 Thunderbird Marina: Slips start at $3,220 per year for a 20-footer and climb from there.

🚤 Burrard Civic Marina (Vancouver): $14.38–$16.76 per foot per month, depending on boat size.

⛵ Westbay Marine Village: $14.25–$16.50 per foot per month.

Bottom line: If you want shore power and a hot shower, you’ll pay for the privilege. The average is $50/day for shore power and $2 for showers.

Mooring Buoys: The Middle Ground

If you don’t need a full marina but still want to stay put without dropping an anchor, a mooring buoy is a solid choice.

Option 1: Install Your Own Mooring Buoy

Want to set up your own permanent parking spot? You can install a private mooring buoy—as long as you follow federal regulations. However this is a political issue right not in British Columbia and it's like the Wild Wild West. The Bays are filling with moorings due to the housing crisis and sooner or later - it's going to come to a head.

No specific permit is required if you meet the standards, but the installation cost can run from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on:

🔩 Anchor type
🌊 Water depth
⚓ Professional installation fees

Option 2: Rent a Mooring Buoy

Not into DIY? You can rent a buoy instead. Some marine parks in BC offer mooring balls for a small fee, and private owners may rent them out as well. Around southern Vancouver Island, they rent from $150 - $250 per month.

Bottom line: Mooring buoys save you cash compared to marinas, but you’ll still have some costs to consider.

Anchoring: The Free-99 Option (Mostly)

Want to keep your cruising budget as low as possible? Anchoring is free—except when it’s not.

Where You Can Anchor for Free

Legally speaking, you can anchor almost anywhere in BC as long as you:
✅ Don’t block navigation routes
✅ Don’t drop anchor in a sensitive marine area
✅ Make sure your anchor actually holds (because dragging into a docked superyacht would be awkward)

Where You Can’t Anchor for Free

While common law technically allows temporary anchoring, some areas have restrictions. For example:

Marine parks often have designated mooring buoys (that you have to pay for) and limits on how long you can anchor for. Usually 14 days.

Certain harbors limit anchoring time (like Deep Cove).

Bottom line: If you love free living, anchoring is the way to go—but make sure you’re allowed to stay before you settle in.

Final Thoughts: What’s Your Best Option?

Need power, showers, and convenience? → Go for a marina (but be ready to fork over some cash).

Want a secure spot without the high fees? → Try a mooring buoy (either rented or DIY).

Love the freedom of the open water? → Drop the hook and anchor for free (just check the local rules first).

No matter how you secure your boat in BC, there’s always a way to make it work within your budget. So whether you’re splurging on a marina spa day or enjoying a free night at anchor, happy cruising!

The Inside Passage of British Columbia is a dream route for boaters, offering breathtaking scenery, remote anchorages, and hidden gems waiting to be explored. As we made our way north, we stopped for the night in Forward Harbour on January 2, 2025. This peaceful anchorage, tucked away between rugged mountains and dense coastal forests, was an unforgettable stop on our journey.

Navigating into Forward Harbour

The entrance to Forward Harbour is a little tight, especially for larger boats, but we managed it with our 78-foot aluminum yacht. Once inside, we were met with a spacious bay, offering plenty of room to anchor. The water was 50 feet deep with excellent holding, and we found a great spot just outside a seasonal fishing camp.

The camp was empty this time of year, giving the harbour an even more remote and peaceful feel. With no signs of human activity, it was just us, the water, and the wild beauty of the British Columbia coast.

A Unique Walk Through Beach Treasures

One of the first things we did upon arrival was check out the well-known walking trail at the head of the bay. This isn’t just any trail—it’s decorated with beachcomber finds, creating a quirky and artistic path through the trees. From buoys and driftwood sculptures to old fishing gear repurposed into decorations, it was like stepping into a forest art gallery curated by past visitors.

Dinghy Exploration: A Sinking Barge, an Old Log Dump & Fishing Camps

After our walk, we launched the dinghy to explore the harbour further. We quickly discovered that Forward Harbour has a lot of history.

🏚️ Sinking Barge – One of the first things we found was a half-sunken barge, a reminder of the harbour’s past use for logging and fishing operations.

🌲 Old Log Dump – Further along, we came across an abandoned log dump, where timber was once loaded onto barges. It’s always fascinating to see remnants of BC’s logging industry, slowly being reclaimed by nature.

🎣 Fishing Camps – Scattered throughout the area were around 10 fishing camps, belonging to the local First Nations community. These seasonal camps have likely been used for generations and stand as a testament to the deep connection Indigenous people have with these waters.

The Most Unexpected Discovery: Golfing in Forward Harbour

Of all the things we expected to find in a remote BC anchorage, a set of golf clubs sitting in a field was not one of them! Naturally, we couldn’t resist testing our skills—though, let’s just say we won’t be joining the PGA Tour anytime soon. Still, it was a hilarious and unexpected highlight of the trip.

Ancient Petroglyphs on the Beach

As we continued exploring the shoreline, we stumbled upon something truly special—ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks. These carvings, visible at high tide, faced outward toward the harbour.

Petroglyphs like these are rare and full of mystery. They could mark an important fishing location, tell a legend, or be a territorial marker. Regardless of their meaning, standing in front of them was a humbling experience. It was a powerful reminder that these waters have been navigated and lived on for thousands of years.

Final Thoughts: Why Forward Harbour is Worth a Stop

Forward Harbour turned out to be much more than just a safe anchorage for the night—it was a place full of history, surprises, and natural beauty. Whether it’s the peaceful anchorage, the decorated walking trail, the forgotten relics of the past, or the ancient petroglyphs, this spot is well worth exploring.

For anyone cruising the Inside Passage, Forward Harbour is a stop you won’t regret!

Leaking Teak Decks: Maintenance and Repairs

Teak decks are beautiful, durable, and provide excellent grip, but over time, they can develop leaks that lead to water damage and costly repairs. If you own a boat with a teak deck, regular maintenance is key to preventing leaks and extending the life of your deck.

In this guide, we’ll cover:
✅ Why teak decks leak
✅ Signs of a leaking teak deck
✅ Maintenance tips to prevent leaks
✅ How to repair a leaking teak deck

Why Do Teak Decks Leak?

Over time, wear and tear, exposure to sun and saltwater, and aging sealant can cause teak decks to leak. Here are the main culprits:

Worn-out caulking – The black caulk between teak planks shrinks, cracks, or falls out, allowing water to seep through.

Loose or missing screws – Many older teak decks are screwed down, and over time, the screws can loosen, letting water penetrate.

Wood shrinkage – Teak naturally expands and contracts, and as it ages, it can shrink, opening gaps in the seams.

Deck core damage – If water gets through the teak, it can rot the deck core, leading to serious structural issues.

Signs Your Teak Deck is Leaking

If you notice any of these signs, your teak deck may be leaking:

❌ Water stains or damp spots below deck
❌ Black or missing caulking between teak planks
❌ Soft or spongy spots when walking on deck
❌ Mildew, mold, or a musty smell inside the cabin
❌ Rusty or leaking screws in the deck

Catching a leak early can save you from expensive repairs down the road!

Teak Deck Maintenance to Prevent Leaks

Regular maintenance helps keep teak decks watertight and looking great. Here’s what you can do:

✔ Clean the deck properly – Use a soft brush and mild soap; avoid high-pressure washing, which can damage the wood and caulk.

✔ Re-caulk when needed – If caulking is cracked or missing, replace it before water gets in.

✔ Check screws and fasteners – Tighten loose screws or replace missing ones.

✔ Sand lightly when necessary – Over-sanding weakens the deck, so only do it when absolutely needed.

✔ Seal properly – Some boaters prefer to seal their teak decks, while others leave them untreated. If sealing, use a high-quality marine-grade sealer.

How to Repair a Leaking Teak Deck

If you already have leaks, here’s how to fix them:

1. Identify the Leak

Check below deck for signs of water intrusion.

Look for loose or damaged caulking and missing screws.

2. Remove Old Caulking

Use a caulk removal tool or scraper to take out old, cracked caulk between planks.

Clean the grooves thoroughly before reapplying.

3. Re-Caulk the Seams

Apply marine-grade teak deck caulk using a caulking gun.

Let it cure fully before walking on the deck.

4. Replace or Repair Damaged Planks

If a plank is cracked or rotting, remove and replace it.

Ensure it is properly bedded with marine adhesive to prevent leaks.

5. Address Core Damage (If Needed)

If water has soaked into the deck core, you may need to remove sections of the deck and repair the core. This is a major repair but crucial to prevent further damage.

Final Thoughts: Stay on Top of Teak Deck Care

Teak decks are a stunning feature on any boat, but leaks can lead to major issues if not addressed. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and proper caulking can keep your teak deck in top shape for years to come.

If your deck is already leaking, act fast—the sooner you fix the issue, the less damage you'll have to deal with!

Introduction

I have lived off-grid on my boat for over 3 years now with my family of 4 — now 3 (our son moved onto land) and the biggest thing we had to figure out to live on board full time is WATER! Where were we going to get water? Especially since we were not on a dock and instead on a mooring or cruising the waters of the Pacific Northwest.

>>SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Traditional Methods of Acquiring Fresh Water

It use to be that you could only get water in marinas or by hauling jugs of water into your dinghy from taps on land. However this has been getting harder and harder to do in North America as many marinas do not like liveaboards or allow liveaboards to dock for a few hours to fill up with water. Many marinas are now charging day rates for people to do this.

Public docks also do not have water and in Canada, where we live, the water sources on land are turned off in the winter to prevent the pipes from freezing.

Many places allegedly have public water spiggots but I haven’t been able to find one around Victoria BC. This means filling up from house spiggots and it’s very awkward to ask permmission to do so.

Gas Stations do have spiggots however then there is the issued to transporting your jugs of water.

The other way of getting water is to purchase — but for showers and washing dishes — this can get expensive.

Innovative Ways to Produce Fresh Water

1. Reverse Osmosis

So we had to become innovative. How were we going to get enough water to run a family household? The only way we were going to be able to continue to live off-grid is to make our own water. Yep — we had to make the salt water that was all around us into fresh water.

Luckily — we had a reverse osmosis watermaker on our boat when we purchased it and my husband just had to fix it. Now the saltwater goes through 8 filters and one special one before it goes into our tanks — which we drink out of. The special one is a filter that puts the minerals our body needs back into the water. When you use reverse osmosis — the filters take EVERYTHING out of the water which includes minerals and if you drank this water long enough — you would develop health issues.

There are three other ways to make or gather water when living off-grid.

2. Rainwater Harvesting Systems

I worked in Bermuda for three years and the Bermudians have this down to an art. Their rooves are made to collect rainwater and divet it into large cisterns. You can do the same thing on boats. Your deck is a perfect collection surface — if you keep it clean — and the rainwater can be diverted straight into your tanks or through a filter system before it goes into your tanks. Your awnings and solar panels can also collect rainwater ans speaking from experience — washing your hair with rainwater makes it really really soft!

3. Solar Stills

A solar still works by using sunlight, which passes through a glass cover on top of the still, to warm up salty or impure water that’s placed in a container inside it.

As the sunlight heats the water, some of it turns into vapor or steam, leaving the salt and impurities behind. (think of a kettle)

This steam then touches the cool underside of the glass cover and turns back into liquid water, which is now pure. The glass helps by not only letting sunlight in but also by cooling down due to the outside air, which helps the steam turn back into water more efficiently.

This process gives us clean drinking water from salty or dirty water, using just the power of the sun. It’s a smart and eco-friendly way to make fresh water, especially in places where fresh water is hard to come by.

4. Portable Desalination Devices:

My sister has one of these on her boat it works like a humdinger. She has the Rainman system and when they are cruising and running out of water, she pulls out the case — hooks it up — puts the briny water drain overboard and the fresh water drain in her tank and turns it on. It doesn’t take long before all her water tanks are full and she can drink straight out of her water tanks.

However the Rainman is thousands of dollars. If you are looking for a portable desalination device — check out this one for under $200 from Amazon!

>>My Waterclub Reverse Osmosis System from Amazon

Ensuring Water Safety and Quality

Before you put water in your tanks — we highly recommend testing it to make sure it is clean and safe because once on the boat — it can contaminate your tanks and the cleaning process can be arduous.

>>BUY A DIGITAL WATER TESTER FROM AMAZON

Conclusion

Living on a boat is a dream for many but you have to remember that there are things you have to consider like where are you going to get or how are you going to make water.

Living on a boat means making smart choices about space and functionality. Every appliance has to earn its place, and for me, my Instant Pot is a must-have. Whether I’m making soups in cold climates, cooking freshly caught crab, or canning food for long-term storage, my Instant Pot does it all.

If you're looking for a versatile, space-saving appliance that makes boat life easier, keep reading to see why I always make room for mine!

What is an Instant Pot?

The Instant Pot is a multi-functional electric pressure cooker that can replace several appliances in one. It functions as a:

✅ Pressure cooker
✅ Slow cooker
✅ Rice cooker
✅ Steamer
✅ Sauté pan
✅ Yogurt maker
✅ Canner (for certain models)

For boaters, having one appliance that does the job of many is a game-changer.

Different Sizes to Fit Your Boat’s Galley

One of the best things about the Instant Pot is that it comes in multiple sizes, so you can find one that fits your galley space:

3-Quart – Best for solo sailors or small boats with limited counter space. BUY IT HERE

6-Quart – The most popular size, perfect for making soups, stews, and batch cooking. Buy on Amazon BUY IT HERE

8-Quart – Great for larger boats or those who cook big meals and preserve food. BUY IT HERE

Personally, I use the 6-quart model, as it strikes a balance between capacity and storage space on my boat.

Why the Instant Pot is Perfect for Boat Life

1. Warm Meals in Cold Climates

Nothing beats a hot bowl of soup or chili after a cold day on the water. The Instant Pot makes it easy to cook hearty meals without standing over a stove for hours.

2. Cooking Fresh Crab & Seafood

If you love catching and cooking your own seafood, the Instant Pot is a game-changer. I use mine to steam crab and lobster quickly and evenly—without using too much propane or heating up the boat.

3. Canning & Preserving Food

For extended trips, food preservation is key. Some Instant Pot models support canning, allowing me to store homemade soups, broths, and sauces without taking up freezer space.

4. Effortless Hard-Boiled Eggs

Making perfect hard-boiled eggs is ridiculously easy with the Instant Pot. No guessing, no mess—just perfect eggs every time.

Pros and Cons of Using an Instant Pot on a Boat

✅ Pros:

✔ Saves counter and storage space by replacing multiple appliances
✔ Uses less power than traditional cooking methods
✔ Fast cooking reduces propane or generator usage
✔ Great for meal prep and preserving food
✔ Easy cleanup with a single pot

❌ Cons:

✘ Needs power – Requires shore power, an inverter, or a generator
✘ Storage space – Even the smaller models take up room in a compact galley
✘ Learning curve – Some recipes take trial and error to get perfect

How I Make Room for My Instant Pot on My Boat

Boat kitchens (galleys) don’t have much space, so storing appliances can be a challenge. Here’s how I make room for my Instant Pot:

✅ Dedicated Storage Spot – I store mine in a deep cabinet near the galley for easy accessor if I'm using it quite a bit, it is on the floor in a corner strapped in.
✅ Multipurpose Use – Since it replaces multiple appliances, I don’t need a separate rice cooker or slow cooker.
✅ Secure for Rough Seas – I keep it in place with non-slip mats and a bungee cord when underway.

Final Thoughts: The Instant Pot is a Must-Have for Boaters

For me, the Instant Pot is 100% worth the space it takes up on my boat. It’s efficient, versatile, and makes meal prep easier while living on the water.

This scenic and historic anchorage offers excellent boating, kayaking, and hiking opportunities, making it a must-visit for adventurers exploring the region.

Whether you're arriving by sailboat, powerboat, or kayak, Wakes Cove provides a peaceful and picturesque stop. However, navigating into the cove can be tricky, so careful planning is essential. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting and anchoring in Wakes Cove Provincial Park.

The History of Wakes Cove Provincial Park

Established in June 2002, Wakes Cove is named after Captain Baldwin Wake, a retired British naval officer who purchased land here in 1876. The land remained in his family until the 1920s, but Captain Wake himself met a mysterious fate—his sloop was found wrecked, with his belongings washed up on Thetis Island, though his body was never recovered.

Today, the park offers visitors a glimpse into its rich maritime history, along with breathtaking coastal landscapes and abundant wildlife.

Getting to Wakes Cove: Navigating Gabriola Passage

Reaching Wakes Cove requires careful timing and navigation. If you're arriving by boat, you’ll need to pass through Gabriola Passage, where strong currents can make entry challenging.

🛥️ Pro Tip: The passage spits you out directly into Wakes Cove, so it's best to time your arrival with slack tide for a smoother entry.

Anchoring in Wakes Cove

Once inside the cove, you'll find excellent anchoring conditions with a mud bottom, providing good holding for your anchor.

We anchored right in the middle of the cove for a secure and peaceful stay.

There’s also a government dock near an old steam donkey, making access to the shore easy.

Things to Do in Wakes Cove

Wakes Cove isn’t just a great anchorage—it’s also a fantastic place for hiking, exploring by dinghy, and spotting wildlife.

Hiking & Exploring on Land

The park features well-maintained trails that lead through beautiful forests.

Be mindful of private property on the west side of the bay.

Dinghy Adventures & Wildlife Watching

Exploring the shoreline by dinghy or kayak is a must-do when visiting Wakes Cove!

Go clockwise around Valdes Island to discover a large sea lion colony—a loud and unforgettable sight! 🦭

Go counterclockwise to see stunning sandstone formations, caves, and intriguing log booms.

Our Experience in Wakes Cove

We visited Wakes Cove in December 2024, spending one unforgettable night before heading north toward Jedidiah Island. This was one of our favorite spots, and we captured the entire experience in a YouTube video. To watch, search "We Discovered Something Loud and Stinky on this Remote Canadian Island!" on Exploring the World Onboard Tangaroa.

If you’re looking for a peaceful yet adventurous anchorage, Wakes Cove Provincial Park is well worth a visit!

If you own a boat, you’ve likely heard about zincs—but what exactly are they, and why are they so important? Zincs, also known as sacrificial anodes, play a crucial role in protecting your boat from corrosion. Without them, your boat’s metal components—such as the hull, propeller, and engine—could deteriorate rapidly due to electrolysis.

In this article, we’ll cover:
✅ What zincs are and how they work
✅ Why boats need zincs
✅ How to determine how many zincs your boat needs
✅ Installing zincs on an aluminum boat
✅ Why regular zinc checks are essential

What Are Zincs and How Do They Work?

Zincs are pieces of highly reactive metal (usually zinc, aluminum, or magnesium) that are attached to a boat’s metal parts to prevent corrosion. They work through a process called galvanic corrosion, where metals in water naturally break down over time due to electrical currents.

Because zinc is more electrically reactive than other metals on your boat, it will corrode first, sacrificing itself to protect more important components. That’s why they’re called sacrificial anodes.

Why Do Boats Need Zincs?

Without sacrificial anodes, critical boat parts such as:

Propellers

Shafts

Rudders

Hull plating (especially aluminum boats)

Outboard and sterndrive engines

… would rapidly corrode, leading to expensive damage and potential safety risks. Saltwater environments accelerate this process, making zincs especially important for boats that operate in the ocean.

How Many Zincs Does Your Boat Need?

The number of zincs required depends on several factors:

1️⃣ Boat Size and Metal Exposure – Larger boats or boats with more exposed metal parts need more zincs.

2️⃣ Type of Water –

Saltwater: Zinc anodes are most common.

Brackish water: Aluminum anodes work best.

Freshwater: Magnesium anodes are ideal.

3️⃣ Electrical Systems – Boats with multiple electrical systems or bonded metal parts require more anodes.

A good rule of thumb is to consult your boat manufacturer’s guidelines or a marine professional to determine the right amount and placement of zincs.

Installing Zincs on an Aluminum Boat

For aluminum boats, installing zincs is straightforward but crucial. Since aluminum is already a softer metal, you don’t want corrosion to start anywhere on the hull.

Important: Instead of bolting or screwing zincs onto the hull like on fiberglass or steel boats, zincs on an aluminum boat must be welded on. This ensures proper electrical conductivity and prevents detachment over time.

Checking and Replacing Zincs Regularly

Zincs are not a set-it-and-forget-it solution. They wear down over time and need regular inspections to ensure they’re still effective.

How often should you check your zincs?

At least every couple of months if your boat is in saltwater.

Every few months for boats in freshwater.

During haul-outs and routine maintenance.

What happens if your zincs are completely gone?
Once a zinc anode is fully corroded, the water will start attacking other metals on your boat, leading to serious and expensive damage.

Final Thoughts: Protect Your Boat with Zincs

Sacrificial anodes are one of the most affordable and essential ways to protect your boat from corrosion. Ensuring you have the right number of zincs, installing them correctly (especially on aluminum boats), and checking them frequently will extend the life of your boat’s critical components.

If you’re unsure whether your zincs are still working, it’s always better to replace them sooner rather than later!
